Taylor Rodrigues, Love Canal

I used the Love canal video and also an article I found about Fukushima. The article was entitled “Fukushima fallout may be causing illness in American babies: Study”

Comments:

-Why have I never heard of this!

-Have they had any problems with the containment of the love canal sense?

-I can’t believe that the Japan nuclear problem is still affecting us.

-What can we do to make sure the issue in Japan doesn’t affect us today?

-What are they doing to contain the problems caused by Japan?

-Have people in the Love Canal area had issues anytime recently?

-This is interesting, thanks for sharing!

-I personally think it is important to know about something that happened in the past so we don’t make the same mistake again!

-Let’s not let history repeat itself!

-Those poor families!

Were you aware that environmental tragedies of this magnitude still exist today?
I knew that there were environmental tragedies and problems out there such as the nuclear power plant in Japan that was causing a lot of problems and apparently is still having some adverse effects today. I guess what I never realized is how extensive they can be and how much happens that we never hear about. I have never heard about the Love Canal and I wonder how many other environmental tragedies are waiting to happen that just haven’t been found yet.

Environmental tragedies still exist today; what can we do today to mitigate these problems?
I think that the biggest thing we can do first and foremost to mitigate the problem is knowledge and education. Videos like this one is a great way to raise awareness about the past and therefore raise questions about what were doing today to make sure that we are safe. I think that we need to also have preventative measures in place and policies set up to keep the public safe. When there is a potential risk there needs to be tentative solutions put into place. I think that we can also speak up as a public and fight for our safety and well-being. With the love canal the government really wasn’t doing a lot until the public made some noise and it looked like they had to keep it up for quite a while before anything actually happened.

Why should we care about something that happened over 30 years ago?
When we remember the past we can learn from it. When we understand what has happened in the past we can learn from them and improve what we do today so that things like that wont repeat themselves. History tends to repeat itself unless we do something to change how we do things. If we always do what we’ve always done, then we’ll always get what we’ve always had. If we don’t change things we can’t expect anything to change and history will repeat itself.
