Alex Neff- Love Canal Tragedy

Here is an interesting article I found while searching for a recent tragedy:

My personal questions answered:
Why should we care about something that happened over 30 years ago?
Personally I think we should not dwell on the fact that it happened because it was so long ago. I do believe that we should learn from this tragedy and make sure it never happens again. It should have never happened in the first place, but we learn from it and move on. If it happened thirty years ago it still has potential to happen again and we can’t let that happen.
Do you believe that environmental crises affect you/your family today?
I do believe that environmental crises affect me and my family. Just because it seems tragedies are so distant from our home it doesn’t mean it doesn’t affect my family. I have had family members who have been part of tragedies which affects my family in the fact that we feel the need to help them. Who knows, sooner or later I might be part of an environmental tragedy along with my family.
Were you aware that environmental tragedies of this magnitude still exist today?
I had some kind of idea that environmental tragedies still exist to this day, but almost only on rare occasions. When you hear of these tragedies it usually makes national news. I always thought that environmental tragedies were on the downfall, but by the looks of it, not as much.

  • ·         Interesting insights. I think that tragedies like this affect everybody, and we need to think we need to put these potential hazards above the potential to make money. Thank you for bringing these pressing issues to my attention. Do you which environmental agency I can write a letter to with my concerns?

  • ·         I don't believe it affects me. i'm sure there are things around me but i'm not aware of them so I don't feel affected.

  • ·         No cuz they aren't ever near me

  • ·         In the long run I don’t believe it affects me or my family. It’s all too far away for me to get affected by such a thing.

  • ·         Nah. I think it only affects the people who are directly involved with the tragedy.

  • ·         Most of these tragedies affect everybody everywhere. Financial these tragedies affect the entire population of the United States. Many people might not notice now, but once people think about it, it sure does affect them.

  • ·         I’ve never heard of this canal tragedy until I just barely watched this video. From that I don’t think it affects me or anyone far away from it.

  • ·         I’m sure it affects me and also things around me like Jason said, but I rarely ever notice.

  • ·         Wow.. this is really interesting. I have never heard of this ever happening. I can’t believe it ever happened. The engineers must have really sucked. I don’t feel affected by it, but then again I probably am.

  • ·         I don’t feel affected just because it’s too far away.
