Love Canal Report---Tyler Clonts

Love Canal Report----Tyler Clonts

I asked about the BP Oil Spill of 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico. The question I proposed was, “Environmental tragedies still exist today; what can we do today to mitigate these problems or how can they affect us?

Responses:
1.      Oil spills are expensive to clean up, raising the price of oil and lowering the quality of life of the lower and middle class.
2.       Oil spills are terrible, my mother is an animal lover and can hardly watch as the animals suffer. As well my dad loves sea food and oil spills like this only seem to raise the prices and make it harder to enjoy the good things in life.
3.      The gulf oil spill was a media frenzy and was badly mismanaged and over blown. The result has been an economic disaster that is ruining oil prices and hurting the economy.
4.      Oil spills are something that we as humans need to take responsibility for. BUT, the ways to prevent oil spills such as decreasing the amount of drilling or investing in better ways to drill are somewhat unrealistic at this point with world dependence on oil and the already high cost of it. Oil spills are tragic for animals and marine life, and I do advocate for responsibility when they do happen, but realize the high cost involved in keeping them from happening.
5.      Oil spills kill wildlife
6.      I agree with Kelsea, technology is key. However, as long as people are greedy and need more and more money, incidences like these will continue to happen because people will always be wanting to expand and push for more.. Competitiveness is good, as far as prices are concerned, we just need to have regulations and laws in place to prevent things like this from happening in the future.
7.       Oil spills suck. But they happen.
8.      Oil spills are sad and disgusting. I agree that it is hard to see the animals suffer and it's ridiculously hard and expensive to clean up.
9.      Its sad to think because i don't know of a better way to transport it, i wish there was but there isn’t its sad for all the Wildlife it makes it super sad how much it kills and how hard it is to clean up.
10.   Definitely interesting reading this article and examining it from hind site. Oil is a necessity, even environmentalists use it directly or indirectly. I think of Petrobras a deep water drilling company out of Brazil who operates rigs and wells two to three times deeper than the Horizon well. They do it safe and effective. It is unfortunate that these incidents happen. Just because a plane crashes doesn't mean we stop flying. I am of the opinion that things will be studied and improved upon. In the mean time lets continue using shale and oil sands drilling, fracking, etc. They are all safe and proven methods of creating an energy independent America.
My responses:
1. In your opinion are environmental hazards something we should be concerned about on a daily basis?
-No we shouldn’t be super concerned.  We should live in the present and worry about daily
concerns and problems but yes we should be aware and aid the ways to prevent them if we can.
2. Were you aware that environmental tragedies of this magnitude still exist today?
-Yes I am aware because we have worldwide news so readily available to us.
3. How do environmental tragedies affect you on a daily basis? Why should we care about them?
-They affect us greatly expecially something huge.  Our economy is distrupted.  We need to be anxiously engaged in good causes to aid in prevention and help when they do strike because this is the world that we live in and everything happening world wide affects us.
