Love Canal- Hannah Hirst

After posting the Love Canal video and an article about the Aral Sea Tragedy, these are the reactions I received. I asked how we could mitigate these problems today.

1. The most effective mitigation strategy begins with an informed and morally sensitive public

2. I believe that in today's society, people don't care about the environment as much as they should. I feel that if we took better care of what is around us, it would help many of these problems.

3. Environmental regulations that work for the benefit of all people will help to mitigate these problems.

4.  People do not realize the permanent damage one simple thing can do to an entire environment!

5. We need more laws and regulations to help eliminate environmental hazards such as these.

6. People need to be held responsible and liable when it comes to environmental polluting.

7. Some people are so irresponsible!

8. These are both examples of neglect made by individuals.

9. In a world of increased complexity and interdependence, we need environmental protections that recognize the interconnectedness of our communities.

10. We need to realize that the choices we make today will impact the quality of life for future generations.

My Reactions:

In your opinion are environmental hazards something we should be concerned about on a daily basis?
I believe that environmental hazards are something that we should be aware of and be concerned about. After learning about the Love Canal Tragedy, I realized the effects that environmental hazards can have on the health of individuals and their families. To ensure the safety and the good health of our society, we need to be aware of environmental hazards that could potentially be around us.

Why should we care about something that happened over 30 years ago?
Environmental tragedies like the Love Canal have occurred in the past and continue to occur today. In order to reduce the likelihood of another environmental tragedy of this magnitude occurring in the future, we need care about this particular event. When we analyze and understand what occurred over 30 years ago, we are that much more educated and prepared for the future.

Were you aware that environmental tragedies of this magnitude still exist today?
While I knew that environmental hazards existed today, I figured that environmental tragedies of this magnitude did not occur often due to regulation. However, the Love Canal Tragedy and the article that I found about the Aral Sea Tragedy both demonstrated that they do in fact still exist today.
