Danielle Scherbel -- Love Canal Report

I posted the Love Canal video along with an article about the 2010 Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill and I asked the question, "In your opinion are environmental hazards something we should be concerned about on a daily basis?"

2010 Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill

Jenn--- Yes, I believe that environmental hazards are something we should be significantly worried about on a daily basis. I think there are many ways that we could focus more on prevention instead of cleaning up the aftermath. In regards to the oil spill in the gulf I believe that drilling for the oil was a good idea but the controls set in place to protect us from spills were not followed. Maybe having more frequent testing of controls would help prevent more issues.

Connie--We should all be concerned daily about environmental hazards because they are so easy to create.  For instance on a personal level, throwing away paint or batteries or house hold cleaning chemicals is hazardous but is easy to justify that the little bit I need to throw away isn't enough to create a hazard. Also it is easy to want to dump hazardous liquids on the ground, because it's easier to do that than to get rid of them correctly.  The plastic that we throw away is astronomical.  I have mounds and mounds of grocery plastic bags that I don't want to throw away but they just keeping mounding up.  I ought to be using the reusable material bags.  The reason it is hard to be conscience of the hazards is because it takes time to dispose of hazardous stuff correctly and we tend to think that "a little bit won't hurt".  We never know what the guy that lives above us is dumping into the soil and what the runoff will be to our property.  Our air quality is poor because of all the sprays and gases that we put into the air.  Even our aerosol hairspray can be pollutant.
The fume emissions from our vehicles are very dangerous and yet we seldom try to drive less often and walk or ride a bike.

Tim--Interesting videos, Dani.  I do think that we should be concerned about these things on a daily basis.  The Love Canal, located in Niagara Falls, was in my mission and I served in that area for six months.  Decades after that incident, the people still talked about it with much sorrow and regret.  While the environmental affects may now be minimal, the psychological affect it has had on the people within that community remains.

Kellie--My answer to the question is YES, I think we should be concerned with environmental hazards on a daily basis.

Jon--Yes, well why not? It's the little choices that add up to big success or big failures. If we make small decisions everyday that are good, then we can protect the environment and not have huge failures.

My answers to 3 questions are as follows:

Question 1: Environmental tragedies still exist today; what can we do today to mitigate these problems?:

  • It is true that environmental tragedies still exist today. It is important for us as citizens to speak up and keep speaking up about problems that exist around us. We need to be like the Gibbs mother in the Love Canal video and speak out our thoughts and opinions about environmental problems. We can also strive individually to be environmentally clean in all aspects of our lives. For example, take shorter showers, dispose of wastes in proper places, walk or bike to school, etc.

Question 2: In your opinion are environmental hazards something we should be concerned about on a daily basis?:
  • Yes, we should be concerned with environmental hazards on a daily basis. Doing small things every day that are harmful to the environment adds up in the end, and ultimately the outcome could be a huge tragedy that kills thousands even millions of people.

Question 3: Why should we care about something that happened over 30 years ago?:
  •  It is important to learn from past events in order to be better in the future. History informs and warns us of things that we need to be careful and how to take care of future matters. Learning from the past could save millions of live in the future.
