Austin Tyler - Love Canal Report

Spill casts chill on Keystone XL project

In your opinion are environmental hazards something we should be concerned about on a daily basis?

I don't know if daily basis is the right way to phrase it, but it's definitely something I think we should be vigilant about. In other words, we don't need to live in constant fear of an oil pipeline exploding in our yard, but we should be aware of the consequences of our actions w.r.t. the environment

Both of these stories are pretty terrible, both for the people and the environment. I agree that it is certainly important to be concerned about stuff like this. We should do what we can to implement preventative measures to keep stuff like this from happening again. However, like Mark said, constant fear isn't the best way of looking at it. I think that these issues need to be handled with moderation. There is a lot of money wasted and opportunities passed up because of over zealous environmental policies. Overall, it's important that we are concerned with the environment, but in moderation.

I think that the environment is important and we should do more to protect it

On a daily basis I would say no. But it is something that everyone should be aware of . Corrections need to be fixed properly the first time to prevent these kinds of things from happening. And the safety of the environment and of the people needs to be something that companies are concerned about, more than making money or saving money. Prevention is key rather than intervention.

Honestly, no. I agree with the comment above in that prevention is key. We need not go out of our way to cause problems, however, we also need not stress about where we are now. The Earth will one day soon return to its paradisaical glory and while yes we must treat God's creations with respect we are not accountable for the sins of our fathers and I mostly don't really care that much... I do but I don't you know?

I think that it is important to recognize and try to fix the problem of environmental hazards, but I also agree with these folks that prevention would be much more effective than trying to fix a preexisting hazard. I think we do need to respect the creations of God, but it is hard/impossible to control what other people do.

Prevention is key but unfortunately it has already happened. We obviously need to be concerned with it for the time being and prevention is just another step in the process. but thanks to our friends from the good old days, we need to be concerned and careful.

I don't know if I would go as far as to say we need to be concerned daily with environmental hazards. I think it's important that we do our best to keep the environment clean by the way we choose to live each day. But I don't think it's vital that we focus on the sunk costs of where the environment is right now. The people who chose to continue living in the love canal after seeing the birth defects and miscarriage rates were quite frankly idiots.

We should absolutely be concerned about environmental hazards in our day to day lives. While these examples are the obvious and dramatic ones, we encounter environmental hazards in the form of pollution all the time. Sometimes we don't even know it. So yeah, we oughtta be concerned!

For the average citizen, preventing environmental hazards isnt necessarily in our hands. Things like minimizing waste and recycling are things we can do to prevent harm to the environment and decrease the amount of waste being transferred to landfills. However, even recycling processes need to undergo massive changes as many recycling processes pump harmful chemicals into the environment. Ultimately, the major hazards should be focused on by those corporations and organizations in charge of pipelines, landfills, etc. and should constantly be working on improving the relationship between their line of work and the environment to prevent future problems.

My Response:

Do you believe that environmental crises affect you/your family today?
Although nothing quite as severe as the Love Canal incident is happening to my family, I believe there are many things that have negative effects on our health.  Harmful air quality is probably the most prevalent thing here in Provo.

In your opinion are environmental hazards something we should be concerned about on a daily basis?
Although it’s important that we take care of the environment and take precautions to prevent environmental hazards, I don’t think it’s something we need to be concerned about on a daily basis.  We should be responsible whenever an opportunity presents itself to care for the environment.

Why should we care about something that happened over 30 years ago?
History has a tendency of repeating itself and it’s important that we learn from the mistakes of the past.  If we forget the lessons learned from the Love Canal incident, terrible things are likely to happen again.
