Love Canal- Alexandra Johnson

I asked people to read the Love Canal article along with an article on the oil spill and recent horizon explosion.

Question: “Comment with your reaction to the video. These kinds of things are still happening today.”

1.“Its the governments responsibility to pass policies and regulations to make sure people aren't abusing their power. On an individual basis, we can contact our government and express our concern.”
Noelle Goodine

2.“I think this just shows the importance of how vulnerable we all are of many dangerous things that happen on a daily basis. This one tragedy in public health is a wake up call and shows how much we are being protected from on a daily basis in our normal lives. “
Jana Johnson

3.“Many of the environmental hazards that we see today are created by humans so we are the only ones who have the power to prevent them. Even if it may seem that a certain environmental hazard is not affecting us directly, it still will affect us in the long run. The world is made up of an entire ecosystem and every thing has its place. Environmental hazards disrupt this ecosystem which in turn disrupts the whole chain of connections that we ought to protect. “Candace Call

4.“Stunning. Absolutely shocking. I never knew such an atrocity was possible. I will be, in the future, keeping my eye out for those sneaky chemical companies that dump in places, but disguise their true potential with connotatively happy words like 'love.' I am deeply concerned that I might presently be on one of these liquid Satan dump sites and planning on going to investigate further.” Hunter Johnson

5.“I don't remember that happening but I guess I was pretty young at the time.  What a scary thing to hear about things like that.  It makes me realize that I bet there is a lot of that going on even with all the regulations we have to prevent it.  It makes me wonder about how much we don't know is going on around us and how much we are affected by it, without us even knowing it!  All those people getting sick and all the birth defects that these chemicals have caused and continue to cause!!! IT MAKES ME SICK!  You should go into public health so you can stop these things from happening!“ Patti Johnson

6.”This is a sad story but things like this happened prior to people understanding the effects of toxic waste we do have a lot of these dump sites throughout the world not just the USA . I don't get alarmed at story's like this. It is only a sign of the times.” Shane Johnson

7.”I think it is scary how careless acts can affect our planet and the people and animals living on it in such a negative way. If we aren’t more careful in the little things they will add up to be big problems that may not effect us but future generations.”
Beth Morley

8. “Love canal was a tragedy.  It is good that the Government finally acted on the problem and compensated the people who lived there.  I think this is the reason for the creation of the EPA, to take care of problems like this hopefully before they go to the extent that Love Canal did.”
Mariah Johnson

9. “It is good that the EPA was instigated to work this problem and other hazardous waste sites that exist to clean up the problems. I think the companies who produce hazardous waste should be required to have an approved plan to dispose of their waste and be held liable for such disposal.
I think that because of the awareness of the hazards attributed to the waste, the companies producing the waste should be required to detoxify their waste before disposing of it so it would not become a problem in the future.  This should be possible because of the modern technology available now.”
 Norville Broadbent

10. “SCARY!!!! The story of the Love Canal renews my fears of all the "remedies" that have been used over the years to take care of waste materials.
One situation we have close to home in Washington is the Hanford site in Eastern Washington where radioactive waste was "dumped".  I don't understand how or why people can knowingly live in that vicinity. Problems like these are more prevalent than we want to acknowledge.Hopefully the government will actively and aggressively pursue to identify these sights and find ways to contain
the areas so they are not a health hazard.”
 Leoyce Broadbent

My comments:
1. In your opinion are environmental hazards something we should be concerned about on a daily basis.

I think that tragedies effect us because everyday we do things as individuals to help us prevent tragedies. For example, recycling, conserving energy, and lifestyle changes like walking or riding a bike instead or a car.

2. Why should we care about something that happened over 30 years ago?

Learning about past events such as the love canal tragedy that happened over 30 years ago can help us learn so much about our country and how public health is and how it has changed. It shows us the flaws that can help us improve things in the future.

3. Do you believe that environmental crises affect you/your family today?

I feel like environmental crisis’ are happening all the time and that my family and I are affected. Outbreaks of food borne illnesses as well as sicknesses like the flu occur continually and we always have to adjust our lifestyles in order to prevent coming in contact with them.
