A public way of promoting the meaning of "Public Health"

For me, Public Health is "PUBLIC". I chose this location because a bus is a public transportation that many people use everyday. This is the 811 line that goes from Provo to Sandy. Many people use this bus everyday which means that there is a chance that more than one person will see this add. Moreover, I chose this line because people from different backgrounds and different places will see it and hopefully they become interested in public health.

This is public health to me. I recently started a new exercise program (insanity workout) and I got my roommates involved. Public health is choosing to be active and healthy and influencing others to make healthy choices too!

Public Water Fountains

This is a water fountain located on the third floor of the SAB. I chose to place the sticker here because it is a very visible and popular area. Water fountains present many health risks such as viruses, bacteria, and poor water quality.

Be Idle Free

This picture is in front of Canyon Crest Elementary School in Provo. Provo is the 6th most polluted city in the United States. Pollution in the air can lead to serious health effects such as asthma. How can we fix this? Turn off your cars when you are sitting in line to pick up your children!

It is finally summer and time to be pulling out the swimsuits! We all want to be outside enjoying the sun but we also need to be careful. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States and 1 person dies from it every hour. Also 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer over the course of their lifetime. Whenever we are out in the sun we should wear sunscreen to protect our bodies from harmful UV rays. This is public health.

Trash disposal is something that defines public health to me. The waste management system helps the community out in a variety of ways.  By having ways of properly disposing of trash, including recyclable materials, citizens are able to have more hygienic living conditions, prevent food-borne illness and disease from spreading, and the environment stays cleaner and landfills can be lessened when the trash is taken care of in the right manner.

living a healthy and active lifestyle

My brother is a world class gymnast and as such has the opportunity to promote a healthy lifestyle throughout the world.  He inspires people to get active and to live an active lifestyle instead of a sedentary one.  He helps kids at his gym to achieve their acrobatics skills.  He is proof of how raised activity levels improve your mental and physical health.  Activity is a very big thing in my family, I am a dancer and I teach dance to kids ages 4 to 16.  I am able to show them how to be active and how physical activity can be fun.  Both my brother and I can be classified as health promoters.  He competes internationally and inspires healthy lifestyles everywhere and I teach dance to adolescents, providing and promoting healthy physical activities.
Sabrina Franks:
I placed my public health sticker on the cage of a therapy pet who was allowed into a housing complex to help the inhabitant with their anxiety and depression. For me public health isn't just about maintaining the physical body but about people's mental well-being too. Public health is making sure people are not mentally ill as well as physically ill and this therapy rat is an example of that principle.

Have you heard of herd immunity?

Have you heard of herd immunity?  Simply stated when a majority of the population gets a vaccine then the whole population is protected against a disease.  In this example we see that our neighborhood Walgreens provides whooping cough vaccines.  Gotta love public health.

Thirsy Dog

I decided to walk around a park with my dog. I got a little thirsty and noticed that in this public park there were multiple drinking fountains. This is public health because we were at a park that the city created for our health and drinking water also provided for the city. Also when I wasn't looking my dog decided to drink out of the fountain. This shows that we always don't know what can contaminate what we eat and drink.

The bridge in front of my parents house is over the stream that runs down Emigration Canyon!
We need to keep the water clean in order to enjoy the canyons and the beauty that surrounds us.

WATCH OUT!!

This caution tape  sets boundaries for us and helps us see what we need to avoid in order to stay safe. It helps prevent us from going into dangerous areas. Public health is the same way. It's all about prevention and helping us to see what we do and don't need to do in order to be healthy and safe.      -Tiffany Brown-

Food Preparation

Food items such as eggs and chicken need to be throughly cooked, and cleaned up afterwards.  Without using precautions when preparing these foods, food borne illness, like salmonella, can spread.  We can avoid this by not eating raw cookie dough, and other items that have raw eggs.  After cutting raw chicken, make sure you clean up.  Leave no trace of chicken before preparing another item of food.

One of the most important parts of Public Health is encouraging the individual to make a conscious effort to advance the goal of a healthy society.  An act as simple as washing your hands on a regular basis can have a far reaching and positive effect on society. Better hygiene on behalf of the individual can prevent the spread of germs that, especially when contracted by the young and the elderly, can severely harm others.

disposable gloves are public health

Disposable gloves like these help prevent the spread of disease and infection by providing a physical barrier between contaminated surfaces (i.e. soiled hospital linens) and the wearer's skin. If worn properly, they can help minimize the transmission of many infectious agents to other individuals. Disposable gloves are public health.

With all the chemical products we use in our homes, it is important that we know the chemicals we are using and if there is any potential harm that can come from these chemicals. Many household product can be harmful if used in the wrong way.

I drive a jeep and when I don't wear my seatbelt I feel completely vulnerable to being launched out of the vehicle.  My seatbelt is public health because it helps keep me inside in the event of a crash.

Peas please

The grocery store represents public health to me because it provides a safe place for the neighborhood to buy food. Not only are grocery stores a symbol of public health but the food is as well as it has passed through the FDA approval process.

A tree represents public health because it provides health to the whole population. Trees use the carbon dioxide we breathe out and give us back oxygen. Oxygen is vital to our health, so thank goodness for trees!

This picture reminds me of Public Health because it not only warns us of a potential hazard, but it is also multicultural!

Hit by a car? No way!

These flags are Public Health to me because they are used to prevent the hitting of pedestrians on a busy intersection near campus. Even though they are incredibly nerdy and I have never seen one person use these flags, look how happy I am because I am not going to get vehicular slaughtered! These demonstrate public health because they are there to prevent bad things from happening.

Rules, Rules, Rules

Let's be real. No one actually takes the BYU Police seriously (especially with those shorts and bike helmets), but it is policies and regulations like these that I see as a huge part of public health. I'm sure at the surface none of us enjoy taxes, speed limits, housing regulations, etc but it is these sort of things that keep our communities safe and clean, and promote the overall health of the public that we enjoy. -Brett Shaw

Seat Belts

Seat belts are public health!  It wasn't until I read the email from Professor Fugal about the top public health news stories and one was all about car accidents and then I realized how important seat belts are to public health.  Since public health is all about prevention it only makes sense that seat belts, which are a huge part of preventing injury during an accident, would be a part of public health.  Seat belts not only protect the wearer during a car accident they also protect the other passengers because they keep everyone safely in their seats.  This is public health because policies and laws have been made that require seat belts to be worn at all times in the car.  I'm a huge supporter of always "buckling up for safety" and you should be too!!!

Transportation

Many parts of our day are spent going one place to another. The most convenient and most used method of transportation is by car, which causes pollution and uses fuel. An easy way to help cut down on pollution is by using alternate modes of transportation, such as my longboard. Although driving would be much easier, I ride my longboard to and from work in order to conserve gas, cut back on pollution, and get exercise. To me this is public health; caring about the well-being of the community and also ourselves.

Sunburned Skin

My friend Lexi spent two hours at the pool yesterday and woke up with a burn.  Sunbathing can lead to cancer, varying in severity and prognosis.  Primary prevention public health programs to educate the public on the dangers of sunbathing, burns, and the importance of sunscreen have been around for decades.  When people become aware of the dangers of sunburns, a shift in attitudes, beliefs, and actions develop.  This is public health.

This is a picture of the Red Cross Disaster Relief van. The Red Cross  is a emergency response organization that works to relieve and prevent suffering in our community.  They are committed to community service, supporting the military, processing and distributing blood, and also have educational programs that promote health and safety. They are public health.

Color Me Rad

This was at the Color Me Rad 5K race at UVU on April 28. Not only was it a fantastic exercise promotion, but they provided numerous "clean-up" areas after the messy race and water bottles! Three of the most important areas in public health are highlighted in this event: exercise, hygiene, and (drinking) water
Combining that with good, wholesome, bio-degradable FUN Public Health !

Bikes! Bikes! Bikes!

Three years ago, a bike path was added to many of the streets in my city. I live at the bottom of the canyon and a bike path was necessary for this area. Since the recent addition, I have noticed a significant increase in physical activity around my town.  Providing safer ways for people to enjoy physical activity, can also help promote physical activity. This is public health.

You can eat tacos, but NO SMOKING

This No Smoking sign was on the door of a Taco Bell in south Provo.  The sticker on the window says that no one is permitted to smoke inside or within 25 feet of the establishment.  It states that this rule is in accordance with the Utah Indoor Clean Air Act. By posting this sticker and by enforcing the state law the air within and around this Taco Bell is cleaner and healthier for all patrons thus enabling them to enjoy their tacos without having to breathe in Second Hand Smoke.

This is a map for the Spanish Fork River Trail, this trail provides people with a safe and enjoyable place to walk.  Along the trail there are also several parks that you can stop and do other activities.  This is public health, providing the public with safe places to exercise and enjoy life.  - Jordan Downey

Bus Stop!

This bus stop is part of an organized public transport system. Organized Public transport, such as bus systems, with set drop off and pick up spots help to decrease accident rates by stopping at designated, clearly labeled points, that are easily recognizable by all on the road. The opposite of this would stopping at random points along a road, such as a taxi cap would do, which has potential to be dangerous as other drivers are not aware of when a car will be coming to a complete stop.

According to kidshealth.org just twenty-one percent of adults wash their hands after handling money. With statistics like this it is no wonder that diseases are easily spread with just a handshake. If we learn correct hand-washing methods, and develop healthy hand-washing habits we can progress towards a healthier future.

No Latex!

This picture was taken at the entrance of a hospital. There are many people that suffer from severe allergies of latex. This sign represents public health as the hopsital is asking for the cooperation of everyone to protect the health of those individuals allergic to latex. -Mason Carter

Car Wash

I choose to put my Public Health sticker in a local car wash. When washing our cars in public car washes we are saving the environment by not letting chemicals and other contaminates get into our local drains. Many individuals don't understand the damages that can be done by washing their cars in their own driveway.

Pharmacy and Public Health

This picture displays an element of public health. As a pharmacy technician, I know that pharmacy plays a big role in the regulation of medicine from the warehouse to the general public. We also assist in counseling and vaccination to help improve and promote the general quality of health in the population.

Raising Awareness

Last Saturday I participated in "Walk for MS Salt Lake."  The girl holding the sticker in the picture is my best friend, Cami Jo.  We've been friends ever since we were 6 years old.  About a year ago, Cami Jo got diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).  Very little is known about MS and there is no cure.  In order to support Cami Jo and to raise awareness of MS and  to raise funds for research, we got together a team and walked the three mile route.  The walk raised about $500,000 towards research and at least 3,500 people participated in the walk.  To me, this is public health: working with the public to increase awareness, educate, prevent poor health (when possible), and support those with health issues.

This is Public Health sticker... Marathon

I put my sticker on the marathon sign because encouraging people to be active and giving them sanctioned opportunities to do so will help increase physical activity in the community; which, in turn, will increase it's overall health
