Chad Sellers: Love Canal Tragedy: Delhi Pesticide Explosion - 30 years of after-effects

Death by Toxicit: NEW DELHI - Who will be able to decontaminate Bhopal? During the night of December 3, 1984, a Union Carbide pesticide plant exploded in the north Indian city of Bhopal, releasing toxic gases that killed between 15,000 and 30,000 people.
As of 2009, the State of Madhya Pradesh still refuses to acknowledge the area is dangerous to inhabitants, who have an extremely high rate of birth defects. - more at the website

Why The Bhopal Disaster Site, 28 Years Later, Is Still A Toxic Killer

Who is responsible to repair the environmental tragedy?

me: I think that the company that spilled it has too much control over the Indian government. I think the only way to get action taken on the matter would be to use our marking companies to put pressure on the company that caused the accident. In other words, i think India needs indirect encouragement if we want to keep business clean on both ends
  1.   It is unfortunate but common response to disasters of this type in developing countries. It reminds me of the Russians who always try to ignore and/or keep such disasters from being known in the press. What evidence is there to show the area is still dangerous? What is the rate of birth defects in the area. I would not want to make an assumption based on anecdotal evidence.
  2. .  ummm... that sucks.the State is extremely prideful to not even acknowledge a weakness in their systembut how many people die from cigarettes every year? and cigarette companies are fully aware of the dangers but never like to admit itthere's the cynical point of view
  3. .   Um... I would say so since there is no immediate threat to American priorities. It might sound cruel, but I would think a major corperation would be able to do the job and not spend tax payer's dollars. When I say the government, I mean the government of India.
  4. .    my initial reaction is that the local government needs to take a better look at the region that is causing people to die and potentially causing birth defects. My one question is if anybody has connected the birth defects to the explosion.
  5.     inside job
  6.     The area needs to be purified of the toxins. The responsibility belongs more to our government who are capable of handling the issue.
  7.    I think that the problem has more to do with our government not discouraging foreign companies in business negotiations when accidents like this happen. Our marketing sector on Pesticides should be able to put pressure on the big corporation guys
  8. 7. We need to clean up everything. But the issue is the responsibility of their government alone.
  9. 9.     petition the government to send national aide!...idk
  10. 8.    India should clean it up. it was there responsibility. it would be nice it europe help but i don't see how it would be europe's responsibilit
