Andi Hoffman

I posted a link to an article about the oil spill in Gulf of Mexico as well as the Love Canal video. I posted the question;
“Were you aware that environmental tragedies of this magnitude still exist today?” I got the following responses:

  1. There is nothing more "natural" than oil. Sure oil spills are inconvenient and can cause plants and animals that would have eventually died anyway to die early, but the real tragedy is the money lost by the oil companies!!
  2. Where does all the oil come from?
  3. What the heck kind of perverted name is “love canal”?
  4. Whooaaa, had no idea.
  5. Thanks for sharing.
  6. Interesting, What sorts of things are people doing to change these occurrences?
  7. I remember the oil spill!
  8. Dude. Is that the same oil spill that had all the pictures of animals covered in oil?
  9. This is so sad.
  10. I remember hearing about that oil spill.

My response:
  1. Environmental tragedies still exist today; what can we do today to mitigate these problems.
Educating ourselves and becoming aware of the long term effects our actions have on our environment. I think the first step we need to take is to educate more. People need to be aware of what is going on around them.

2. Why should we care about something that happened over 30 years ago?
First of all it is important to learn from past mistakes. Secondly the effects can still be present thirty years later. With many environmental disasters long term affects seem to take place.
  1. 3. Do you believe that environmental crises affect you/your family today?
I think that it affects everyone. The connection may be more obvious to people in certain situations but just because it is less obvious does not mean it does not exist.
