Tate Chauncey Love Canal Report

I posted an article from the Huntington Post on the nuclear disaster that occurred in Fukushima, Japan after the earthquake in 2011. I was in the Philippines during this time and I remember hearing about this so I was interested in finding out what went on.
Were you aware that environmental tragedies of this magnitude still exist today?
1)      No I really was not aware that stuff like this still happened. It was interesting but kind of scary actually to read it.
2)      No I guess I don’t think about it. You don’t realize stuff goes on until you’re the one affected and it’s too late.
3)      Yeah I remember hearing about this but something like this wouldn’t happen in the U.S. nowadays so it doesn’t matter. Maybe before but not now.
4)      I didn’t realize tragedies of THIS magnitude still existed. 14,000 people were affected??? That is crazy to me.
5)      Yeah I knew that these things still happened. In my job I hear about these kinds of things quite often, though they usually aren’t quite this big.
6)      No I didn’t know these things happened but I’m still not gonna worry about it. What difference would it make if I did worry? I don’t have enough power to get anything changed anyway.
7)      I can’t believe that they can let stuff like this still happen!! Don’t people know that Japan is always going to have earthquakes and tsunamis?? It seems they should prepare better.
8)      Dang man I had no idea this even happened…
9)      I need to pay more attention!! I only watch news about sports and that’s gonna get me into trouble when something serious happens around me and I don’t know about it haha
10)   We all need to be more aware but it’s honestly hard to be concerned or treat it seriously when it happens so far away though.

Do you believe that environmental crises affect you/your family today?

Yes I do think that environmental crises affect my family. I am from Las Vegas so I have grown up hearing about Yucca Mountain. That is a nuclear waste dump site just outside of where I’m from. It is disconcerting to know that it is pretty similar to what happened in the Love Canal tragedy. It could leak into our water and spread at any time.

Why should we care about something that happened over 30 years ago?

“History repeats itself” is a phrase we hear quite often. Things that happened before can happen now no matter how prepared we think we are. I stated before that the place I live may end up having a problem like the Love Canal very soon. We need to learn from their mistakes.

To what degree do environmental tragedies affect you/your family on a day to basis?

“On a day to day basis” is the key phrase here. If you look at it one day at a time and not the big picture then you are prone to miss out on trends and things going on around you. Over a period of time I feel like my family and I will be affected but if you just look at one day it is hard to notice any environmental tragedies going on unless it is a major event.
