Love canal report - Jamie Peterson

I posted an article about the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
Other’s Reactions to question: How do environmental tragedies affect you on a daily basis? Why should we care about them?
1.       Environmental tragedies affect me by raising gas and food prices. The reason I care is because I must spend more money
2.       Tragedies that happen in the environment can affect people I know or care about. Tragedies like the love canal could have injured or killed someone I know or care about.
3.       Price of gas goes up with oil spills; the shrimp I buy from New Orleans goes up when all the oil from the BP oil spill gets over them too.
4.       When there are environmental disasters like the oil spill in the gulf it affects me financially. I pay more for seafood. I pay more for oil.
5.       Not only seafood, but the gas to transport anything goes up so food prices go up because we as consumers have to cover the inflation.
6.       Repetitive environmental accidents increase the deterioration of our overall world’s environment.  Anyone that lives in the world should care because it affects us in little ways.
7.       Bad things happen in the environment and it is important for us to be aware and to care so we can understand the reason of gas and oil prices rising as well as animals dying like what happened in the oil spill.
8.       Environmental tragedies can effect on how much I pay for things.  They ask for money donations for the cleanup efforts. Also, travel is affected. The area is unpassable. The coastal areas are unusable.
9.       We should care because these tragedies affect us in numerous ways and if we don’t care, the problems will go unchecked and will eventually become bigger problems with bigger repercussions.
10.   Sometimes we get caught up in our lives and we take the environment for granted. We need to remember that the environment can’t take care of itself and if we don’t care about it, someday it could be too late.

My Reactions to 3 questions:
1.       Do you believe that environmental crises affect you/your family today?
a.       Yes, I believe that environmental crises occur frequently enough to have a great deal of effects on both me and my family. The oil spill killed the wildlife in the oceans as well as raising the prices of oil and seafood.
2.       Environmental tragedies still exist today; what can we do today to mitigate these problems?
a.       I think each person plays their own part in the environmental “go green” initiative. It is not hard to recycle or to avoid littering. We can lessen the blow that environmental tragedies have by doing our part in keeping the environment clean.
3.       Why should we care about something that happened over 30 years ago?
a.       Although the Love Canal incident happened a long time ago, it is still important to be aware that environmental tragedies occur frequently.  It is important to care about the tragedy so that we do not make the same mistakes.
