Love Canal Report-Emma Bradshaw

I posted an article about Hurricane Sandy along with the Love Canal story and the question, "In your opinion are environmental hazards something we should be concerned about on a daily basis?" on Facebook, and here are the responses I received:

1. With a name like the "Love Canal", I thought it was going to be a happy story. Boy was I wrong! What a terribly horrifying story. I'm not sure if I'm concerned about environmental hazards on a daily basis, but maybe I should be.
2. Love canal and I were born the same year. (oh dear) I think we should be concerned about environmental hazards on a daily basis to the extent that we are willing to do our part to prevent and correct them.
3. It seems like the victims of the Love Canal accident weren't aware of what was underneath their homes. It's a good idea to research a new neighborhood before moving in. Some areas are at a higher risk for disaster, and should be more alert than low-risk areas. So I don't think we should be concerned daily, just periodically.
4. Hard to believe that really happened (that's why I live in AZ). I think we should be concerned about environmental hazards on a daily basis. This video reminded me that I need to be more prepared and do my best to protect the environment.
5. Yikes! I agree with Candice. I don't usually give it much thought, but being more aware I think would definitely make a difference.
6. Wow! Yes, we should be concerned about environmental hazards on a daily basis so that we aren't caught completely by surprise when they happen or when we hear that they have happened to others. Perhaps we could lessen the devastation that these hazards cause if we just take some time to educate ourselves and prepare.
7. I love canals. And I agree with Candice that we should concern ourselves to the extent that we have power to "prevent and correct" environmental disasters. I don't know what I can do on a daily basis to prevent underground chemical explosions and hurricanes. I do the best I can though, in small ways, like conserving water and recycling when I can. As Chris Christie so eloquently stated: "This is not a time to be stupid." That time was decades ago, when we built houses on toxic waste dumps. Now is the time to not do those things.
8. I don't think they are necessary to be concerned about every day, but maybe every other day. They are serious, just not something to stress over on a daily basis.
9. Yes, I think we should be concerned, not only for our current environmental status, but the future for our children, etc. If there are things we can do to help prevent or restore things to a better condition, I believe it is our obligation to help make our communities a safer place to live.
10. I think it's important to be aware of environmental hazards on a daily basis. I don't feel like it's something to worry about constantly or lose sleep over, but taking precautions could definitely avoid a disaster.
11. I think it is important to be aware of things, but I don't think they are anything to worry about daily, adding unneeded stress and govern to our lives. It's too much to always worry about the unknown, and its better to just be optimistic
12. When it comes to hurricanes and stuff, I just like to #YOLO
3 questions:
In your opinion are environmental hazards something we should be concerned about on a daily basis?
I agree with what was said by most of my friends and family.  I think that we should be aware of the environment and of our surroundings so that you don't accidentally move your family into a chemical infested home, but at the same time I think that people need to just live, and not be constantly thinking that something bad is bound to happen.
Do you believe that environmental crises affect you/your family today?
I wasn't really aware, because I feel like my parents have always been very careful and taken the precautions that are necessary in order to keep me and my family safe.  My family is from Arizona where the biggest natural disasters we have are haboobs, and monsoons, and I moved to Utah where there are also no big natural disasters, so I consider myself lucky that I don't have to worry about extreme disasters.
Why should we care about something that happened over 30 years ago?
I think we should care a lot because if we don't make it a big deal, and remind people about it, it is bound to happen again!  Things need to be brought up, and there needs to be a fuss made about situations like this so that laws can be made, and so that they don't repeat themselves in the future.
