I shared an article about the BP oil spill in 2010 on the Gulf of Mexico that came about by the explosion and sinking of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig.
Question:
Were you aware that environmental tragedies of this magnitude still
exist today?
Comments:
1: I had no idea that such large scale disasters were still happening, the last one I remember was the atomic bomb in Japan!
2: Yeah, so what. A little oil isn't going to hurt anybody. Dawn donated a portion of their funds to save the animals affected by oil spills...buy some more Dawn if you want to help.
3: I was actually near the Gulf of Mexico when this happened and it was a much bigger deal than you'd think it was. I was surprised more people don't know about it.
4: Apparently I need to read the newspaper more often. I was even taking a science class with an extremely environmental conscious teacher when this happened and never heard anything about it.
5: Wow, I really need to be thankful that nothing like this has happened where I live! (Knock on wood)
6: I think that people need to be more informed of their surroundings. There are plenty of resources out there that provide adequate information. If you would take the time to read the newspaper, you would realize that disasters like this are more common than you think. It shocks me to see how many people are lazy and don't use the amazing resources that we have. Read the paper.
7: I was definitely not aware that things like this were still happening. I feel embarrassed that I really do have such amazing resources and I never care to use them.
8: In my opinion, this was a terrorist attack. But then again, I believe in conspiracy theories and that almost every disaster is caused by someone attacking our nation.
9: Even though technology and control methods have gotten significantly better, there is no way to guarantee that problems like this will never happen again.
10: I am extremely hurt by the lack of sympathy for the people and the animals affected by this disaster. Dawn doesn't do anything to help save the animals, their soap is tested on animals! It's all for show...don't believe everything you read.
My Responses
1:
In your opinion are environmental hazards something we should be
concerned about on a daily basis?
-Because of the technological advancements, I don't think we should be in panic mode about a natural disaster happening every day, but I do believe that we need to be conscious that such things could still happen to us today.
2:
Why should we care about something that happened over 30 years ago?
-Love Canal effected many people whose lives were turned upside down. The same thing happened during Hurricane Katrina and thousands of people were sent to help. While this was a more current disaster than Love Canal, people were still effected in similar ways and they need to be sensitive to the subject.
3:
Were you aware that environmental tragedies of this magnitude still
exist today?
-I'll answer the question that I asked everyone else. To be honest, I wasn't completely aware that environmental tragedies like this still happen today. I read the paper, but only the things that I am interested in, and I tend to skip over the "boring stuff". I need to do a better job of that. I mean of course I am aware of the major things like Hurricanes and tsunamis, but I feel like things like this aren't as publicized as others.
