- Laurel Ostler Jensen I know that there are many mine tailing piles in Arizona. But Arizona is large in land area so they just sit, an unsightly mess. I'm sure that land area around Niagara Falls had more value as a site for homes. I remember, as a young mom, when the Lo...See More
- Robbie Hughes We should care because history repeats itself. If anything we produce more chemical waste now than ever, and I doubt that the people responsible for its disposal have grown any smarter. The article ends by wondering where the next "spill" would occur (near a water source, etc). It would be interesting to see some statistics on what hazards have occurred since this article was written.
- Jake Frederick I remember a story one of my uncles told me. About 30 years ago he was in a really rough road of life. Drugs, stealing, murder, you name it, he did it. He was all around just not the greatest guy. Possibly one of his most defining moments was when he f...See More
- Albert Uihamohaano I'm not even 30 yet but my wife is. 30 years ago was she born and 30 years later she's pregnant; women's prime time is 30. History is important!
- Nancy Alexzandria Martino One should look back at what has been done right and what was done wrong, So we do not repeat mistakes of the past.
- Kyle Bunker 30 years is a very short time from an environmental/chemical perspective. Some of the substances that we manufacture will still be around for hundreds of years. Storing them properly to prevent contamination is expensive and difficult and unfortunately...See More
- Lynette Bunker I remember when Love Canal was very much in the news!!! Tragically we often do not know the results of acts until the consequences become apparent years later. This event certainly brought to awareness that chemical waste storage needed strong regulat...See More
- Brittany Bunker Thorley Good perspective is a very powerful tool-spatially (knowing that we are not the center of the universe helps us understand other phenomenons like the tide and seasons), emotionally (knowing how others feel helps in collaborative settings), and I think this applies to history as well. We're so much more capable of making good future decisions when we have a past framework to work from.
My reactions:
I am very aware that these kinds of things are happening
today and every time I hear about an environmental tragedy it just makes me
sick at what we are doing to the planet. I mean it is really a gift from God
and so I think when we trash it up it would be like someone taking a new
sweater or cardigan that we bought them and rubbing it in a grease stain on the
driveway.
We need to be concerned about these kinds of things everyday
because concerned and informed citizens equal good citizens. If we are in an
environmental-protection mindset, then we will be prepared to stop any
tragedies we see happening. If we are concerned more often then there is a much
greater chance that change will come about. The article I posted with the love
canal article talked about premature deaths in China due to polluted air. This
hit us in Provo because we also have terrible air pollution which means our
health is affected. We should be concerned about this everyday because everyday
we live with it our health gets worse.
Finally I absolutely believe that we need to be concerned
with the past, even if it was 30 years ago. We have to overcome the mistakes of
the past and stop making them. We have to reflect, learn, and grow into a
better and more eco-friendly society than we have been up to this point. As
mentioned before the earth is God’s gift to us and we have to take care of that
gift by not repeating environmental mistakes that were made in the past.
