Sam Dearden's Love Canal Assignment

These are reactions to both the Love Canal and the Chilean 2010 Earthquake (I showed a movie with footage from the quake).  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9uFiQwkDGDc

#1- The fact that we don’t know where any of the chemicals go when we dump them is pretty scary. The article made me feel disgusted. Environmental  disasters affect me in that they make me scared even though the probability of it happening is pretty low.
#2. Damage wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be not as bad as Haiti. My dad is hyper paranoid about earthquakes, filled with tools.
#3. It was crazy! I almost peed my pants. It would be fun to be in an earthquake.
#4. There was crazy stuff. All the lights and the ceiling falling on people blew my mind! They don’t affect me as they should. Watching it doesn’t seem real.
#5. It touches a heartstring. As a human being you feel bad for those who went through. They don’t really affect us.
#6. They make me sad. NOTHING we can do can stop them.
#7. Environmental disasters are scary. For my family, we were prepared for a huge snowstorm in the east. Trees were down everywhere. It wAS CRAZY. It made you appreciate normal commodities, heat, water etc.
#8. Bueno, no estaria tomando fotos/videos como lo han tomado los chicos en esta pelicula! La verdad es que no me han afectado mucho los desastres. Vale la respuesta?
Translation- Well, you wouldn’t be taking photos and videos like they have in this movie! The truth is that disasters haven’t affected me much. Is that answer okay?

Every day I think that it [the earthquake] will happen again. There’s a bit of fear and anguish in thinking where my children will be the next time this happens and how they might not be prepared. The quake might be bigger that what we lived beforehand and bigger than those in other countries.

Brother, the earthquake affected us a lot. From the last earthquake, things have changed. Today we play where to live along the coast, where to take a swim because of the recent tragedies. Soon we are overcome by our conscience of how to live and how and where we agree with our family if it happens again. Wherefore fights, debates, and plans to confront risks pop up.

My Reactions and Responses

Q: What can we do today to mitigate these problems?

A: We can mitigate environmental disasters by building our cities in smarter places by managing waste disposal. We can reduce carbon emissions and be prepared with food and water.

Q:Do you believe that environmental crises affect you/your family today?
A:Environmental tragedies do affect my family. We have been in a couple hurricanes, but nothing really bad. We have known people who have had significant home damage because of these events. Psychologically, it makes us fearful, yet it also motivates us to be prepared for a potential disasters.

Q:IIn your opinion are environmental hazards something we should be concerned about on a daily basis.

A: I served my mission in Chile where this earthquake happened. It was amazing how impacted everybody was by the earthquake. Everybody has their own story to tell. It was just like my grandparent’s generation. Everybody knew where they were when JFK was shot. So, yes we should be concerned because people have completely changed their lifestyle and live in fear because of these events
