- Kyle Fitzy Shanklin Well, I feel like there should be more rules set in place for businesses such as the one that owned the canal. I understand that there are side effects to business but they should also be concerned for our environment. There should be a set of guidelines as to what should happen with the toxic substances. If the company does have a dumping ground than they should never sell it to contractors to build houses and schools upon. It should be completely off limits.
- Alesha Grant Whipple We need to raise awareness in communities to avoid future tragedies. The more attention it gets, the more policy makers are likely to listen.
- Hayley Hansen I agree with Alesha, i think that it's important to raise awareness. If everyone works even just a little to raise awareness, it can help a lot.
- Diana Jones It is sad there weren't policies in place in the 1930's when they started dumping the chemicals.
- Bread Iverson Yes let's raise awareness and fight the power of the tower. Then when the batman comes then yoda can pull it out and cut a tree down to eat the cereal. And I uh believe that it won't be good for a ton of things to die when they are dead.
- Jameson Hartman ....I wonder what awesome mutant fish exist because of this....Positive? you tell me.
- Parker Graham Nichol Stricter environmental policies. Government Benefits to companies that make extra efforts to protect the environment through tax breaks and stuff
- Victoria Talbot We need harsher environmental laws to prohibit this type of waste disposal. It is an ineffective way of managing waste, and hazardous to us as citizens. Not only would these policies help the environment, they help our nation's health. Action needs to take place.
To what degree do environmental tragedies affect you/your family on a day to basis?
I would say that most the time these environmental tragedies don't affect us as much as we can influence the tragedy. Everything needs to be a group effort and we can make changes in our own household and if everyone eventually made these changes, disasters can be avoided.
Why should we care about something that happened over 30 years ago?
We should be worried because of the infamous phrase, "History repeats itself." If it happened once, it's likely to happen again and there are hundreds of articles that are evidence of support. Oil spills in the ocean affected miles of the US east coast. People need to be aware of problems in the past to prevent them in the future.
Were you aware that environmental tragedies of this magnitude still exist today?
I was aware because I have had environment classes, but I think it's important that this topic gets attention in the pubic eye as well.
