I posted an article about a mudslide that was triggered due to heavy rains in Bunamulemawa, Uganda in the Budapest District in March of 2010. Many homes were destroyed as well as over 100 deaths. Link to article below.

I asked the question: --In your opinion are environmental hazards something we should be concerned about on a daily basis.
Here are the comments I received:
1) "Though I do not drink coffee and I live in a place that is safe from landslides, the tragedy raised awareness in Uganda and helped prepare people for an event like this to occur any time. In addition, it decreased the amount of coffee beans available for export which hurt the economy in Uganda, disabling residents to receive fund to properly build their houses to withstand mudslides. Thank goodness for all the willing humanitarian efforts!"
2) " I don't think it should be a daily concern but we should be aware that these hazards happen."
3) "Although I believe we should be aware of environmental hazards, I don't think it's necessary to concern ourselves over it on a daily basis. There are other things in the world we can spend our time reading about."
4) " I feel like environmental hazards are something we SHOULD be thinking about everyday but sadly most people don't. We should be more aware of what happens around us."
5) "I think people should be aware of the various types of environmental hazards and how to best prepare for them. Some countries, cities and villages are obviously more at risk than others, but everyone should be willing to help provide aid of some form in the case of a tragic environmental disaster, whether it directly impacts you or not."
6) "I think we should be aware of potential environmental hazards and the types of things we can do to be prepared for emergencies; however, I don't think we should be overly concerned on a daily basis. So thankful for so many humanitarian organizations that are there to help people in need. We can all support organizations such as the Red Cross by donating money and/or time."
7) "It is so important to be aware of what is going on around you as far as environmental tragedies so that we are able to help others who are impacted by these unfortunate events. "
8) " I always keep up on the news and make sure that I am what environmental hazards are going on around me. It is good to knowledgeable on tragedies not only in the U.S. but in the world around us."
9) " I don't really care to much about what environmental hazards are going on around me unless they affect me directly. "
10) " These articles made me realize that even though we may not be the victims in environmental tragedies it is still crucial for everyone aware of what is going on around us, especially on a daily basis."
My reactions:
1) Why
should we care about something that happened over 30 years ago?
--We should care because it is important to be aware of environmental tragedies that have happened in the past because they can happen again in the future as well.
2) Environmental
tragedies still exist today; what can we do today to mitigate these problems.
3) In
your opinion are environmental hazards something we should be concerned about
on a daily basis.
--I think we can mitigate these problems by being prepared for emergencies and having organizational/relief efforts.
--I think it is important to be aware of the worldly environmental hazards/emergencies around you but not necessarily on a daily basis.
