Doc Fullmer - Public Health Trends in Riverside

Kevin Meconis, Epidemiologist in Riverside County, CA

Their main focus is in chronic diseases such as heart disease, lung cancer, and asthma. Food poisoning is also very important to them but the volume of cases is much higher with chronic diseases compared to infectious. They are really trying to promote nutrition, physical activity, and non-smoking in order to prevent chronic disease because it is much easier to prevent a chronic disease than try to reverse it, while an infectious disease is usually treatable and more easily reversed. Also they are focusing on improving air quality by trying to push alternative methods of transportation because the smog is getting bad in the county. Some examples are that they are trying to get more bike lanes and in the city of Norco, there are actually lanes on the side walk for riding your horse. They are also promoting the wearing of proper protective equipment when using these alternate methods. That was all Kevin could really offer me…
