Health Determinants that Cause Cancer
By: Rebekah Dickson
I spoke to Simone, a representative from the American cancer society
  1. Tobacco- about 1 in every 5 adults smokes. Because smokers account for 87% of all lung cancer deaths, this is a serious problem. Nicotine, used in cigarettes, is extremely addictive and makes quitting extremely difficult. This is why it continues to effect so many people. There are many carcinogens in cigarettes that include, but are not limited to: Formaldehyde, Ammonia, and Benzene.
  2. Alcohol- Because most of the United States drinks alcoholic beverages, the over indulgence of alcohol is a major cancer causer. Women should drink no more than 1 drink per day and men should drink no more than 2 drinks per day. Many of the adults in the U.S. consume more alcohol than this and are at a higher risk of developing cancer. Teens and those under 21 aren’t suppose to consume alcohol at all however many teens and young adults consume alcohol on a regular basis. Because of this, they are more susceptible to getting cancer.
  3. Diet- America is becoming more and more obese. Many Americans eat unhealthily and it can cause cancer. Many Americans indulge in eating too much red meat. Also eating refined grain products can cause an unhealthy weight and contribute to cancer.  As more Americans become obese and overweight they’re more likely to get cancer since 1 out of 5 cancer deaths are related to obesity.
  4. Exercise- Most adults don’t get enough exercise. Adults are suppose to get at least 75 minutes of vigorous activity a week. However many adults are failing to meet this requirement. Not exercising contributes greatly to obesity, one of the leading associations with cancer death. More exercise will create a healthy weight and prevent cancer.
  5. Sunbathing- When people sunbathe without proper protection, there are many health problems that can follow. Because the suns rays are dangerous to skin, it’s important to take precautions to prevent cancer. Artificial sunbathing (fake bake) is another way to get cancer. The harmful rays are dangerous to the skin and cause skin cancer. Sunscreen, preferably sunblock, is the best way to prevent skin cancer when going outside.
