HEALTH TRENDS in the great state of ALASKA!
1-The Most Common Type of Disease-
The most common type of disease in Alaska is heart disease. Factors that point to this could be the prevalence of diabetes in Alaska. Over 68, 500 people have diabetes in Alaska. This is definitely partly due to the fact that it is so cold in Alaska. Although there are loads of people who enjoy the vast array of outdoor activity in Alaska, there are many others who prefer to stay inside and the inactivity+unhealthy food choices inevitably adds to the occurrence of heart disease.
2-The Most Desired Place to Work-
The most desired place to work in Anchorage, Alaska is, for many men, in the airline field. Be it, pilots, co-pilots, air traffic controllers, aircraft cargo handlers, or flight engineers. There is a strong desire to work in these areas. The Anchorage, Alaska airport has grown immensely since its' first being established in 1953. Today it has a north and south terminal both attractively rennovated and it is known as the Ted Stevens International Airport(so named after the State's beloved senator from 1968-2009). The workers here generally have a good salary, a reliable job, and it's very close to the city. This airport is the one of the largest employers in Anchorage.
3-Most Desired Place to Live-
Some of the best neighborhoods in Anchorage are in the southern part. They are new and known as being the safest area but still relatively close to shopping centers. In one of the most popular neighborhoods called "Huffman-O'malley" you can find 6 schools, 3 grocery stores, and 6 eating restaurants all within a mile of your house. Despite the sense of security one can have living in South Anchorage, this city has a high crime rate. The city property crime rate is 19.58% higher than the national rate, so everyone needs to lock up!
4-The Most Common Substance Used and Abused-
The most common drug used in Anchorage, Alaska and throughout Alaska is marijuana. Alaskan-grown marijuana is known as being high quality and many people grow it indoors. In the 2011 Alaska Youth Risk Behavior Survey analyzers found that 21.2% of high school students frequently use marijuana. This drug is everywhere in Alaska but the government is trying to get it as under control as possible. Just last year they seized 7,882 marijuana plants.
5-The Most Common Environmental Concern-
The most widespread concern with the environment, for good reason, is the snow and the ice in the wintertime/fall/spring..pretty much all year-round! The average snowfall for Anchorage is 75.5 inches but just last winter it had almost double that. With so much snow and the freezing temperatures, this makes life in Alaska a bit more challenging than in most parts of the lower 48. Alaska tries its' best to stay on top of the weather with plenty of snow plows available and working hard to clear the roads during those long winter months.
