Asthma is a disorder where the lungs and airways begin to
swell and narrow up. This causes wheezing, shortness of breath, coughing and
tightness of the chest. The swelling of the air passages reduces the amount of
air that can pass through the air way making it difficult to breath. Asthma can
be caused by breathing in allergy affected substances. Some of these can include
animals, dust, mold, and pollen. Others get shortness of breath when they
participate in sports causing their asthma to heighten.
Diabetes is another risk factor in Massachusetts. Someone
has diabetes when their blood sugars are too high. This is either because they
don’t produce enough insulin or because their body doesn’t respond to insulin
correctly. There are two types of diabetes; type 1 and type 2. Type 1 involves
injections of insulin for the rest of one’s life and is not as common as type 2
diabetes. Type 2 is more common among humans and treatments involve losing
weight, eating healthy, and exercising. This
being the case, obese and overweight people are at a greater risk of developing
type 2 diabetes.
Depression is a medical illness and is more than just being
sad. It involves intense feelings of sadness and the loss of interest in things
one previously enjoyed. Effects can be long-lasting, but it is treatable. Symptoms
of depression include negative thoughts, moods, and behaviors, and changes in
sleep patterns and eating. Symptoms can differ based on age, gender, and
ethnicity. Depression is a clinical disease, therefore it is critical to seek
the help of health professionals when experiencing such symptoms.
Violent crimes are seen more often in the city of Boston,
Massachusetts. Violent crimes are when a person uses violence to harm another person
which can include rape, assault, and murder. The violent crimes statistics had
an 18% jump in the last year. Violent crimes are crimes committed with weapons
and are done with the intent to hurt
someone.
Walking and bike paths are becoming a big thing in
Massachusetts. A lot of improvements have been made to make their environments
a healthier place to live in. Walk and bike paths are a great way to get people
active because it gives them a place to go to get out in to.
